Agility CornerAgility News:
Our next agility trials are only a heartbeat
away--May 14-15th--at Lums Pond State Park. WKC agility committee members
are working hard to make this as successful as the previous trials. We still
have some runs available, so mail those entries in! Many hands are needed
to run an agility trial and if you find that you would be able to help at
the trial, please contact Jan Bibik at
pirwet@udel.edu.
There are refreshments available for workers as well as a chance to win some
wonderful items in the worker raffle! Many thanks to WKC members and
friends who have considerately donated cash or items to our
raffle! Crates, agility equipment, toys, dog beds, treats, even a
massage are some of the items up for grabs! Please come join us! !
With profits from previous trials, the club has purchased a new tunnel, sand
bags, and a pause table. Our old pause table is still in fabulous shape, but
is not as quick to adjust in the middle of the trials, therefore, we will be
offering our old table up for raffle as well.
Classes are full with waiting lists in all levels. Please sign up soon for
the next session which starts the week of May 16th. Many students are
trialing this season and we wish them lots of luck and green ribbons! Go
have fun!!
Pet peeve/training tip of the month: "My
dog can't do off-side weaves" or worse yet, they don't actually admit it,
they just plan every run so that their dog is going to get in the weaves
on-side. Our students have heard me say this over and over again, that if
you teach your dog proper entry to the weaves, the DOG does't know the
difference as long as they have the information early enough on the approach
to the weaves and you stay out of their way. Re-evaluate your training
program. Are you rushing entering trials without the proper weave pole
foundation? Do you find yourself putting the dog back on-side when they are
not successful off-side? If so, take the time to go back to foundation work.
You and your dog will reap the benefits!
Happy training, Shelly Zenorini, Agility Trial Chairman Public EducationInstead of packing up the Information Booth literature until our next event, I'm trying something new. As much information as possible will be displayed on the shelves in the -- well you all know where the shelves are. We have lots of interesting pamphlets from the AKC, booklets from AVMA, information from the State of Delaware, etc. Take a look, help yourself . I'm still in the process of arranging everything so bear with me until everything is neatly displayed.
LegislationCGC Resolution passes House Majority Leader, Rep. Wayne Smith, Sponsored a House Concurrent Resolution endorsing the AKC Canine Good Citizen program. This resolution was passed by the Delaware General Assembly. This is good new since it recognizes that dog-related problems are most often caused by irresponsible owners. This is an important step by our legislators. With breed specific legislation still being pushed in several states, we are fortunate that our legislators are getting the idea that it is the deed, not the breed. Thank you to Rep. Smith and those who supported this resolution. To read House Concurrent Resolution No. 11 go to: http://www.legis.state.de.us/LIS/lis143.nsf/vwLegislation/HCR+11/$file/legis.html?openC&D Canal study could affect dog training activities There is a study being conducted on the C&D Canal through a joint effort by Congressman Castle's office. the Army Corp of Engineers and DNREC. Their plan calls for increased passive recreation on the canal (a multi-use hiking and biking trail) but will have limited impact on the wildlife resources and the current hunting, fishing and dog training activities that the area now supports. However, there has been interest by many recreational groups to extend this vision of passive recreation to include other recreation opportunities (ATV park, swimming pools, golf courses and tennis courts etc.) that if permitted would significantly impact the wildlife resources and existing outdoor activities on the C&D Canal Wildlife Area. The Summit Retriever Training area is a nationally recognized dog training area, drawing dog trainers from as far away as Florida and Maine. This is something to keep an eye on and voice your opinion. To fill out a questionnaire and get more information go to: http://www.nap.usace.army.mil/Projects/CD/If you have never been to the canal, its worth a look. Take binoculars if you go. Some of the roads can be rough and make sure you stay on established/authorized roads. Joe Foster, WKC Legislation Liaison
